Based in Harlem, NY
B. 1965 Glasgow, Scotland
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Debbie Taylor – Kerman has and continues to be influenced by artists Egon Schiele and Mark Rothko as she navigates her artistic process, merging figurative and abstract painting.
Her work is built in layers of paint and collage on wood panel. Her figures and select parts of their individual and diverse style emerges through the layers. Taylor-Kerman is continually adjusting the measure of abstract versus figurative in her work. The question the artist asks herself throughout the process is “what needs to be said and what needs to be left unsaid”. She doesn’t tell the whole story to capture the viewers’ attention, requiring them to explore the work to discover the subtle elements within a painting.
