ARTIST STATEMENT:
Women have always made and continue to make beautiful things through wars, plague, conflict and dark times. It is as relevant today as it was in the past in the search for hope, solace and liberation.
Monair Hyman’s grew up surrounded by pattern, fabrics, flowers, and the delicate designs of chinoiserie plates, her mothers love of sewing, embroidery and tending her garden were her refuge and sparked the artists creativity. Bound to this was the hope of a better life.
Hyman’s practice is informed by memories that reflect different spaces and points in her life. The works are layered with private emotions, stories and hidden things that connect to her family, especially her mother. She is concerned with an exploration of self, identity, the feminine perspective, the complexities of love and the vulnerability of bodies.
Her mixed media painting and drawings are threads that connect the past to the present. They articulate an alternative way of looking at things, making space for “Other" narratives, self expression, and healing.
